Peeples (2013) Review by Steve Pulaski from United States
Tyler Perry Presents Peeples is a bad movie, but it's not a bad moviefor a special reason. It's a lame, tired trudge through the kind ofcutesy, "look at me" romantic-comedy genre of cinema that almost neverfeels as if it is trying. Films like these are usually an easy-sell tothe public because there simply isn't a whole lot to stomach. Evenduring the climatic parts of the film does it feel that there isn't awhole lot going on in terms of development and plot progression. Thesepictures exist to provide audiences members with the kind ofninety-minute material that will not better them in any way, but notmake them think too hard or burden them in any way.

If that's what you want, Peeples delivers on a level that pleases. Forthose seeking more intelligent fare, all I can say is seek on. The filmfeels like an urban redux of Meet the Parents, this time focusing onthe likable but bland Wade Walker (Craig Robinson), a good-intentionedsoul who makes a living off of singing songs to kids urging them to usetheir words and not their bodily fluids (?). He is dating the cute butequally bland Grace Peeples (Kerry Washington), who seems to be lightyears out of his league. Wade feels upset and unfulfilled that hehasn't been acquainted with Grace's family and decides that, in orderto propose to her, he should crash the family's weekend stay in theHamptons.

The head of the family is the bitter, mean-spirited Virgil Peeples(David Alan Grier), who sees Wade's good-natured but ill-fated attemptsat connection and resonance as foolish ways to climb up the ladder oflikability. He is more won over by Daphne Peeples (S. EpathaMerkerson), Grace's mother, and "Sy" (Tyler James Williams), theiryounger son.

What unfolds is a series of predictable and lame antics from a textbookof what a comedy can do to go from mediocre to nearly unStreamingable inrecord time. The cast has all been cheery and capable before, but throwthem together with some of the worst writing of the year in terms ofrealism and tonality and you have an affair that is just incrediblydifficult to stay in-tuned with, even if only for ninety-five minutes.

Returning to the point of realism, the film seems to predicate itshumor off of the unrealistic way the Peeples' respond to Wade's charmand affection for their daughter. They react in a way that no parent, ever, would respond to their daughter's boyfriend's acts of kindness.Much of this played-out, unrealistic cynicism comes from Grier'sVirgil, who is so lowly human and condescending to Wade and his familythat his character never comes close to the line of being funny orentertaining.

There's a scene that absolutely slayed me and that involved Wade,Grace, Virgil, and another member of the Peeples' distance familysitting in the living room and talking about what Wade wants to do inhis future. After they take turns belittling him and treating his "playit by ear" plans as lunacy, Wade stands up and is about to propose toGrace when Daphne calls for suppertime. Everyone remarks about howexcited they are for dinner and leave poor Wade standing alone in theliving room, interrupted and with a lesser-ego. If Wade had done thatto, say, Virgil, he'd be crucified.

It's that kind of instance we're supposed to regard as funny orentertaining. Maybe my humanity for characters in films has increasedsince I began reviewing, but it's scenes like that I find inexcusableand implausible. If the family hadn't been so unbelievable, acting likecompulsive cults with military precision wearing raincoats at thesmallest mention of rain and boasting Timex Streaminges day-in and day-out,that scene alone would've been enough to regard every attempt the filmhas at emotional resonance or relatability has not only facile butcompletely unbecoming.

The film was written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism, who isresponsible for writing the charismatic film Drumline that featured ayoung Nick Cannon and unmissable energy. While Tyler Perry's name isfeatured prominently at the forefront of the film's title, I don'tblame him for the turnout. He can only fund money and input so muchcreative control into such a project. If he had manned the productionship, I would've at least respected earnest attempts at creating drama. Not implausible ones.

If you want a more unconventional film, with real human-interest,ethical issues, complex family relations, and even a romantic subplottry and seek out Jeff Nichols' brilliant Mud as your weekend diversion. It's a truly beautiful picture with themes and a wonderful sense ofadventure - the kinds of things cinema was erected off of. Peeples isthe cinematic equivalent of flat soda.

Peeples (2013) Review by naregian from United States
7/10

Before you write this off as another Tyler Perry black people film, ora rip off of Meet the Parents, read this review.

I have seen multiple Tyler Perry films, and at the beginning, they wereokay, but as we all know, they got old, and fast. This movie is indeedproduced by him, but was not written or directed by him, so his namebeing on it does not mean it is anything like his "Madea" series, orhis other films. I am not really a fan of Tyler Perry, but I did enjoythis film. I am not promising that you will, but don't write it offjust because you are not a fan of the "black family" genre of comedythat Tyler Perry is credited to have popularized.

I believe the reason I enjoyed this film is because of Craig Robinson.I have always enjoyed his scenes in The Office, and I was very pleasedto see his character become somewhat of a main character on the show. When I heard of this film, I was sure it was going to be Meet TheParents: Black Family Edition, but I wanted to see it because of Craignonetheless. I wasn't wrong, but I wasn't completely right. This filmis basically the same thing as Meet The Parents, but it definitely doeshave a few unexpected turns. The reason they are "unexpected" isbecause I had a pre-conceived idea of how the film will play out, because of my love for Meet The Parents. I seriously Streaming that movieevery few months. This film deviates from it's 13 year elder in avariety of ways, but mainly in its plot twists, which allow for quite afew laughs. The awkward scenes, and the situational humor are quitereminiscent.

Enough comparison, now lets get down to the actual movie. Throughoutthe film, there are humorous sequences that carry just enough realismthat they come off as quite funny. I'll admit, I didn't think I'd laughnearly as much as I did. Although a good portion of the humor stemmedfrom either sexual or "black" dialog, it never went over the top.

Of course, like 99% of comedies (with the exception of Horrible Bosses)there are times where you just don't get the humor, and it comes offlame. Sure, there are lame parts, and some jokes fell flat, but overallI was very surprised with the charming humor and witty screenplay, allowing for a likable protagonist, for whom nothing seems to be goingright.

Go ahead, give it a view and don't assume it's another lame Tyler Perryor black family film, because unlike the ratings on IMDb, I actuallyenjoyed this film.

Peeples (2013) Review by shannon johnson (shannon@collectivevolution.org) from United States
I have no idea why people are giving this movie a bad review. It waslight, amusing, and very entertaining. Finally a movie in which blackpeople are like the black people I know. Professionals, that all usecorrect English, that are middle to upper middle class and have theirown funny quirks. No the movie wasn't seeking the cheap laughs fromportraying African Americans in the typical Hollywood skewed context.None of the black women "went off" or did the whole neck thingy. No onewas selling drugs or eating fried chicken or living in the hood.

If you have any experience with African Americans like the onesportrayed here then you will enjoy the movie. If you want every AfricanAmerican movie to follow the stereotypical blue print that it seemsdirectors and production houses insist upon promulgating then you mightnot. Excellent, smart, well written and completely undeserving of that3.8 rating.
